Sharon Michalove has been teasing us with Micki and JL since the end of book one in the Global Security series and their story did not disappoint! From a crazy ex-boyfriend, to almost being kidnapped and a wicked French-Canadian mother this story was fast-paced and full of surprises!

Micki was the type of heroine I live for! She was a strong determined woman set on making her dreams come true even through all the struggles of a crazy ex who didn't know when to quit. There were times when I thought she would crumble, and she never did but when she did JL was right by her side to help get her through it. Ther love story was not really the star of the show and I loved that! They fell in love amongst the chaos and while they had their difficulties it was clear they were made for one another.

JL has kind of had my heart since the beginning because he wasn't as shrouded in secrets as Max was, but he also had this lighthearted quality to him. Yes, he was dangerous and capable of taking things too far if necessary but throughout the entire story he was more focused on what Micki needed to stay safe.

Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke brought these characters to life and their accents for each, and every character were so on point! At the Ready is a solid book all on its own but adding in their vocal stylings amped up the story to another level. Especially Jason Clarke, and the only reason being I think is because he has a much bigger range. Either way, this narration was fantastic as are all of Sharon's.

I've left a lot of the details out of this review because you don't really need to know more than what was in the blurb. There were some twists and turns in this book I didn't see coming and I'd hate to spoil that for other readers. A standalone within a series At the Ready is one of those deliciously good romantic suspense novels you won't want to quit reading until all the T's are crossed and the I's dotted.

At the Ready
Global Security Unlimited 3
By: Sharon Michalove
Narrated by: Samantha Brentmoor, Jason Clarke

Sharon Michalove has created an amazing romantic suspense series with her Global Security Unlimited. This book focuses on JL and Micki(not as in mouse). Micki is working hard to be the next partner in her law firm which is proving to be a difficult task. Their old boys club is throwing up roadblocks at every turn. But for her, work is everything. JL owns Watchdog Security, and he has his own crazy life. His overbearing mother is bound and determined to pick his wife. But what his mother doesn't see is the the chemistry between JL and Micki. Though he is set to protect her from her ex-boyfriend, his feelings for her just keep growing. And as a result, of disappointment at work, her ex stalking her and JL, Micki isn't sure exactly where her life should be taking her. Michalove binds it all together with a fantastic story. It's packed with twists and turns I know I didn't see coming. I love JL and the way he loves Micki and the way he deals with his mother! What a personality! Micki is stubborn and way to absorbed in her career and the turn she takes has earned my respect. This is a fabulous addition to the series and a great listen when the snow is falling!

And how does it get better? Have Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke tell the story. This team is one of my favorites and these two are perfectly cast for these characters. From the accents to the emotions, I was a happy listener as they created their magic and pulled me into the story. It's a fantastic listen!

AT THE READY by Sharon Michalove is an exhilarating story, seamlessly weaving together contemporary romance, international espionage, and suspense. I had the great pleasure of hearing Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke's splendid narration. They had me hooked from the gripping first chapter to the screen-worthy finale bringing Sharon's listeners on a thrill ride through the streets of Paris, the charm of Vancouver, and the challenges of The Windy City's corporate world.

Micki is a determined protagonist, coping with the struggles of the corporate ladder, a creepy ex-boyfriend, and navigating the complexities of her current romantic interest. The plot is thick and twisted, filled with espionage, international terrorism, and supporting characters that add depth to the story. Sharon paints her anti-terrorist security team pragmatically with a familial feel that gives authenticity to the deep connections and trust necessary for the extraordinary teamwork required to get the job done. In a literary world where suspension of belief is often required, I felt like Sharon's third installment in her Global Security Unlimited series had the feel of reality, adding to both the tension and my enjoyment of the story..

Sharon's knowledge of Europe took me back to my own memories of many-a-trip across the pond. Samantha and Jason made me feel as if they've experienced the cities themselves. The engaging characters, well-crafted plot, and the continuation of storylines from Sharon's previous works make this a must-listen for fans of the series. The audio book skillfully captures the emotional nuances, pop culture references, and the delightful French-Canadian swear words. I found myself looking for reasons to fire up Audible to continue my immersion in the story.

Congratulations to Sharon on another winner, an action-packed and romantic installment worthy of her excellent Global Security Unlimited Series.

I received a complimentary copy of the Audible audio book to facilitate this review.

This one is your quintessential romantic suspense, a strong independent woman trying to live her life but pursued by a stalker ex and enter the alpha security boss stopping at nothing to protect her and win her heart. Throw in international travel and espionage and terror plots and you have one riveting listen.

Micki Press and JL Martin have instant chemistry but there timing has never been great that is until Micki throws out her cheating ex and JL swoops in to make his move after admiring her from afar for a long time. But Micki is distracted, she is trying to compete for the partner role at her law firm and then there is escalating antics of her ex. JL will stop at nothing to protect her though and the building relationship between the two against this backdrop is delightful to listen to.

Sharon Michalove also has an uncanny ability when it comes to descriptions of food in her books, I have only listened to one of her other books Dead in the Alley, but I found the same magic there. She has a mastery of vivid decadent descriptions of food that just has me salivating every time. You have been warned!!! The story is absorbing and I like the fast pace of it and the build to the ending to find out what the hell is going on! Classic.

The stars of the show are the narrators though, how could they not be when you have the Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke taking the reins. I am a tad (OK a lot) obsessed with Samantha Brentmoor. She is one of my runaway all time favourite narrators, she is phenomenally talented and her range is delightful to listen to. She is perfect at capturing all the elements of Micki her no nonsense, independent side but also brings out the softer vulnerability lurking beneath and the yearning elements of her relationship with JL. She is also INSANELY good at her male voices, like buttery perfection her slight deeper inflections are just.....well I'm transfixed and she is one of the few female narrators who can perfectly match Jason's energy.

Jason Clarke doesn't really need much introduction at this point, he's amazing and I am always staggered by his ability to switch seamlessly from different pitches/tones and accents all in the same scene. But that is why he is so popular I guess, who else is going to make me swoon for a French Canadian accented hero....well I think the fluent French in some places might have something to do with it. Yes, that's right if you are a fan of the French Jason this is the one for you.

Overall, this was an enjoyable escape and I look forward to catching up on this author's other books.

Suspenseful continuation of the Global Security Unlimited series!

At the Ready is the third book in author Sharon Michalove’s highly addictive Global Security Unlimited books and will be a definite winner with fans of the romantic suspense series. This tale is about partner Jean-Louis “JL” Martin and lawyer Michelle “Micki” Press and their uphill journey to a relationship.

Micki is a senior associate in her prestigious Chicago law firm, up for partner, and facing off against a rival attorney whose uncle is already an established partner. The competition to determine who becomes a partner is stacked against her from the start, and the firm is a genuine good ole boys club with the decision already made. I appreciated that this main character is a seasoned veteran of her craft, a middle-aged woman, but is realistically portrayed as still having professional and personal hopes and dreams.

JL is a protector with strong feelings for his family. He is pulled in several directions throughout the story, trying to take care of his mother, who’s facing a couple of personal challenges while keeping the new passion in his life, Micki, safe. Although I enjoyed the occasional sprinkling of French in the story, sometimes I couldn’t easily determine their meaning, and it got to be a little much for me. I could get the intent from the context. Those with a better command of the French language than I should have no problems.

The plot is intriguing, with two ex-love interests refusing to bow out of the picture voluntarily. While Micki’s former boyfriend, Sam, is eluding law enforcement to continue his harassment, JL’s former girlfriend, Angelique, worms her way into his mother’s good graces to get to him. Both of these storylines are excellent, and Sam’s ways and means of getting to Micki are creepy and baffling for the longest time. The resolution of this storyline was extremely satisfying.

With its engaging characters, great plot, and storylines that continue from the previous books, I recommend AT THE READY for all fans of the series.

I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving an Advanced Review Copy from Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tours.

This series just keeps getting better and better (an audio review)

I want to start with the narration. Although I’m not French Canadian, I was French immersion from age five to seventeen. For the first eight years, I had teachers who drove over from Québec every day to teach me when I lived near Ottawa. I know French Canadian French. I know Québecois French. So I have to compliment Sharon on her accuracy of vocabulary. I even learned a few swear words I didn’t know!

Along with that compliment comes a huge shout out to Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke. Narrating any book is a challenge. Narrating one with accents can be even harder. Jason’s interpretation of JL’s French Canadian worked in every way possible. Samantha’s JL was just as flawless and, of course, her Micki was brilliant. The narration took this book to a whole new level of listening pleasure.

The story was good as well. From Chicago to France to Vancouver and back to Chicago. FYI – I live in Vancouver and was thrilled not only to see it featured, but to have it portrayed accurately. That kind of detail rang true and made me smile.

Occasionally Micki irritated me, but that was a quirk of her character. I liked that she stood up to bullies and came out on top. I like that she had a good relationship with JL but didn’t rely on him to fix everything for her. And I liked that JL was so relatable – a career and love in one city and an aging mother in another. Torn loyalties. This book also tackled domestic violence and what happens when a partner – usually the woman, but not always – is stalked by her ex. Restraining orders are often useless and Micki’s desire to live free of fear was relatable.

I’ve enjoyed all the books in the trilogy and I’m really hoping there are more to come. Like maybe a certain character moving from Vancouver to Chicago? Please? Great book. Great series. Great audio.

At The Ready by Sharon Michalove gripped me in the first chapter. It incorporates contemporary romance, international espionage, a Diehard (yes, as in the movie) female protagonist, and an endearing trip through Europe. Micki is a robust, determined character who fights the good fight most women experience, the corporate ladder. My connection to her increased with each line and obstacle. From her creepy ex-boyfriend who stalks her almost to death to her allegiance to her best friend Cress to her inability to freefall into the arms of the man, JL, who possibly truly loves her. Michalove intertwines realistic life events to make a protagonist we wish we could be.

The plot is thick and twisted, the kind we all love. We are seamlessly transcended from the pages to the streets and eats of Paris. As someone who has never been there before, I have now. Michalove’s characters and plot grow in a beautifully described city with dual language. JL, Micki’s love interest, whisks her to Canada to meet his maman. As a mother-in-law conflict steels Micki’s determination to be respected again, the sparks fly, not the fuzzy ones.

The espionage, international terrorism, and supporting characters create a suspenseful and action-packed trip on a page. One exceptional element was the familial basis of the anti-terrorist security team that Micki is surrounded by through the supporting characters. It’s a pragmatic view of people working in tense situations' deep connections and trust needs. I highly recommend Michalove’s book for her contemporary characters, exceptional knowledge of Europe, and terrorism-based suspense, and for that love story we all wish we had.

3.5 Stars - Rounding up to 4 for the great narration!

At the Ready by Sharon Michalove is book 3 in her Global Security Unlimited series. This is the first book I have read by this author and although it was a captivating listen I did struggle with the storyline and characters. I was really confused at the beginning and borrowed the e-book to help me. I would definitely recommend starting with the previous books.

I did enjoy that both MCs are older, in their 40's. Micki was driven and independent up to make partner at her law firm but dealing with the old man politics of the office. She faced so many challenges at work at in her personal life. JL was part of Global Securities but they did not meet in the book as they were already friends, I felt I needed more of them building/exploring their relationship as everything happened so fast. The writing was very descriptive and involved a lot of locations, Chicago, Paris, and Vancouver and that was fun to see so many places and experiences in one book! We learn right away that Micki is being stalked by her ex-boyfriend, however, she is not at all aware of just how far he will go or be capable of. This story was fast-paced and action-packed throughout with many twists and turns along the way. There are strong friendships among the cast of characters and they did intrigue me as to what happens in their stories. Overall, Even with the struggles I had, I was able to enjoy the storyline and characters.

This was beautifully narrated by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke - the accents and emotions both portrayed during the story had me loving the narration. They were perfect for these characters and storyline.

"At the Ready," by Sharon Michalove, is 70% romance fueled by the increasingly violent attacks that comprise the other 30%. The third book in the Global Security Unlimited series is told in dual point-of-view, focusing on forty-six year old corporate lawyer Michelle (Micki) Press and intense French-Canadian security consultant JL Martin, a close associate of her best friend’s fiancée.

Micki is determined to become the second female partner at the conservative law firm where she works and accepts that forgoing committed relationships is the price of career success. Even though she’s intrigued with JL’s slightly bad boy vibe, work comes first. Always. Micki’s out for a casual connection, company for the rare nights when she’s not working, not a long term relationship.
JL has a different plan. Smitten by Micki the first time they met, he only delayed active pursuit to give her time to get over her good-for-nothing ex, Sam. He’s over the moon when she finally says yes to a date. The trouble is, Sam will do anything to get Micki back. Good thing JL is CEO of a company whose offerings include personal protection.

As I followed Micki and JL through their efforts to explore what they both hope might be, despite Sam’s interference, I particularly enjoyed the sushi-sharing scene. No explicit action—they were in public—but plenty of heat.

Even if you missed the previous two books in the series, you will have no trouble following this one. If you enjoyed the characters as much as I did, you can read the earlier books after you finish.

This is the third novel in a series and would be best appreciated if the previous novels were read first. As with the previous novels, most of it consists of character interaction and relationship development. While the previous novels centered on Max and Cress, this one revolves around the developing relationship between JL and Micki. A little of the time frame parallels the novel before this one but the action is seen from different viewpoints.

There is a little bit of suspense here and there as an ex is stalking Micki and periodically actually does something instead of just sending threatening texts. There is a more deliberate bit of suspense near the end. The narrative is written from the first person viewpoints of JL and Micki. While they are clearly identified at the beginning of each section I did find the technique a bit confusing once I was well into a chapter.

Michalove's writing style is to over dramatize character emotional reactions and subsequent actions. One might cough to almost choking or drop a plate of food at hearing unwanted information, for example.

Michalove excels in setting descriptions including food, events and architecture. This is a good novel for readers who like a greater emphasis on character relationships and interesting descriptions than action and suspense.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Micki is stalked by her ex but is she ready to give her heart to JL? I can’t tell you how much I loved At the Ready. Oh wait, of course I can. It’s a sophisticated later in life, friends to lovers, romantic suspense spanning multiple countries. At the heart of this story is a hero and heroine who have demanding careers and not much time for anything else. But love is always at the ready and this gem is an unputdownable read.

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. Micki and JL are the heart and soul of At the Ready. Micki is a lawyer with plenty of attitude. She’s worked hard to get where she is. She’s passionate, too, which I loved. I connected with her right away.

JL is one hero I fell for immediately. He’s a French-Canadian living in Chicago. As a Canadian myself, I appreciate the nuances the author writes into the character JL. Sharon Michalove did her research, and it makes JL leap from the pages.

The romance is written with realism and plenty of heart. The emotional tension between Micki and JL is palpable. It is great fun watching this couple dance around each other before falling in love.

At the Ready is a book I thoroughly enjoyed. There wasn’t a moment when I wasn’t thinking about the story and the characters while reading. I was sad when it ended as I became quite attached to this couple.

~*~ Audiobook Review ~*~ At the Ready is book 3 in the Global Security Unlimited romantic suspense series and gives us JL and Micki’s story with plenty of surprising twists and turns from multiple threats - both physical and delusional romantic scheming by others. Micki hits the ground running as a legal professional in her mid 40s with hopes to advance within her firm - which requires breaking the glass ceiling while competing against nepotism with underhanded competition. To top that off she has been peripherally involved in the threats covered in prior books, as Cress is her best friend. She is being stalked by an ex-boyfriend who is much more of a threat than she could have imagined. JL is a French Canadian who works with Max at GSU and has had his eye on Micki for a while. There is a lot going on with the multiple threats, but Sharon Michalove carries it all well and keeps you engaged. I did find myself getting frustrated with Micki and her stubbornness; however, it feels true to the character who just got out of a terrible relationship and is a strong professional who shies away from giving up control.

Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke are absolutely perfect! I’m not expert, but I really enjoyed the French-Canadian access and French language. These two are definitely favorite narrators for good reason and I really enjoyed their performances. Fantastic casting!!

Audiobook review: Narrated by Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke

4 stars for story / 5 stars for performance

This is my first Sharon D. Michalove book so I have not read or listened to the previous books in the Global Security series. I could tell where it would have benefited me to have done so, but it wasn't enough to impact Micki and JL's story. It is possible to read this as a standalone but I will be going back to read the previous two books soon. The suspense was up there with Sam, Micki's ex-boyfriend turned st@lker causing all kinds of havoc and JL's mom and her audition for monster-in-law status. Plot wise there was a lot going on and when it came to the action, I felt it came and ended very quickly on multiple occasions. I did really enjoy the overall book and the fact that I listened to this on audio helped bring the story to life immensely.

Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke did an amazing job narrating this book. The accents were everything!! I thoroughly enjoyed this story so much more thanks to the masterful way they performed their characters. They are at the top of the game as far as I'm concerned and I will never turn down an audio that either of them narrate.

At the Ready by Sharon Michalove is a phenomenal journey. I love how complex the characters' stories were. There is that undeniable chemistry and yet so many challenges to overcome. It is like Jason Bourne film. The romance is there but due to complications it never gets the time it deserves to flower completely. Just when I thought they could finally have it, there is another thing that comes to intercept their relationship. Never a dull moment. I also enjoyed the suspense and emotional thrills that came with this couple's relationship.

Sharon Michalove writes well. Her writing is the combination of Irsis Johansen and Rebecca Zanetti. Thus, making it a powerful romantic suspense read. This book has the right combinations of all the elements. The characters are a pleasure to follow. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy a great chase and intrigue.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

Disclaimer: Unless you count Jane Eyre, I have never read anything considered romantic suspense. I can’t even make it through an entire episode of the true crime shows that are so popular. So I was delighted when At the Ready smashed the preconceptions I had about the genre.
I got to experience Vancouver, Paris and Chicago through the eyes of the characters. I loved the pop culture references, the lush and detailed food descriptions, and, best of all, the French-Canadian swear words, which Duolingo probably doesn’t cover.
I recommend At the Ready – and Ms. Michalove’s other books – for anyone who is a fan of romantic suspense, but more importantly, for anyone who wants a page-turning roller coaster of a read.

This was a romance thriller read for the characters of JL and Micki. Micki is a high powered lawyer in a prestigious Chicago law firm. She is looking to be promoted to a partner. But there is a matter of her stalker..

JL is a co owner of Watchdog Inc. a security firm in Chicago as well. He really likes Micki and wants to be more than friends with her but he has baggage in his life as well.

JL decides to help Micki with her stalker problem and the two have to decide if they are friends or something more?🥰

Overall this was an interesting story read and the writing was engaging to the reader. The world was solidly built for the readers and the characters were well written. I was fairly engaged throughout the book as a reader and would like to possibly read more of the series.

This is the third book in the Global Security Unlimited series, a romantic suspense. I wanted to read and review the first two books but did not have the time. If you read only the third book, it stands alone on its own, but it introduces the previous couple who add to the plot and gives you a peek into their life and HEA.

Mikki Press is a lawyer, and she wants the promotion at the firm where she works, but she has competition with another who plays unfair. To complicate matters, her stalker ex Sam is quick on her heels, determined to make her life miserable, in the most dangerous way.

I skipped book 2 to determine if 3 corrected the output of 1. No, it did not. The lead female wasn’t prudish but those intimate scenes were cut like PG5. There’s a ridiculousness to the omission. It doesn’t have to be overly spicey but show some adult language, adult context of sexy times . The story gets wordy & there was a scene in which the female lead was unnecessarily bratty, a reach for her to throw a tantrum or object just because. Female authors, this is a world you can control, why give up your power here too? Why feed into the dumb damsel in distress. God , I wonder what your daughters are like should you authors have any.

DNF at 50%.

I already like the characters in the GSU series, and At the Ready gave me a chance to get to know two more of the folks from earlier novels. Keeping with her usual international adventures, author Sharon Michalove takes JL and Micki, based in Chicago, on the road to Europe and Canada. JL, as a security specialist for GSU, has protection details to arrange, and Micki is weighing her future as a corporate lawyer. Fans of romance in supsenseful circumstances will enjoy this latest additon to the ongoing series.

Micki and Jl.

Micki is ambitious, and stubborn and underestimates the danger. JL is ambitious, and protective, and luckily, good at what he does. There's a lot going on here, with interesting side characters, drama, meddling family, toxic exes, suspense, and throughout it all, these two are falling in love and trying to navigate how that fits into their lives. Loved the French Canadian touches, the travel, the bike...

A light read and perfect if you love a grown up love story!

Thank you NetGalley and the author for the ARC.

This was my first Sharon Michalove book and therefore my first book in the series. Due to this I felt that a lot of the story was lived “in passing” and JL and Micki’s love story was just an add on to the real love story: Max and Cress’.
It’s important to note this is a closed door book and although I’m not opposed to it a little steam would not have been amiss.
Nevertheless this was a great story with beautiful descriptions of locations and architecture, people and food.
I’d also like to congratulate the narrating cast for an amazing performance. French Jason Clarke is unbelievable!!

Really enjoyed Micki and JL story. In addition to the interesting dynamics of their romance but each of them has career and family challenges that all intertwine to deliver an amazing climax to the book. Micki is trying to make partner at her law firm and JL is trying to protect her from a stalker and danger is lurking behind every door. Jason Clarke’s french accent is ‘chef’s kiss’ ! Samantha Brentmoor delivers just the right of angst and resilience to her narration of Micki’s struggles especially while she is being stalked. Looking forward to the next book !

This is the first book I have read in this series, but now I'm going back to read the whole thing from the beginning. The cross-cultural references added to my enjoyment of the romance, while the suspense was enhanced by the relevant quotes beginning each chapter. Both Micki's and JL's complicated lives enhance the suspense around their relationship. Michalove handles all of this with an expert's touch. Brava!

What a wonderful ride!

Kudos to Sharon Michalove! She’s done it again. This third book in the Global Security Unlimited Series is full of action, romance, and globe-trotting! Who could ask for anything more? Kept me on the edge of my seat with both the suspense and the romance. I love how the author gives us a tour of each place we visit in the story without taking us out of the plot (made me feel as if I was there with the characters). Great job, and congratulations, Ms. Michalove!

Nothing like a friends to lovers romance with a little danger thrown in. Michalove has done it again. Micki and JL remind me of people I know. They are passionate and have flaws. They are quirky and have cravings. And their happy endings will leave you with a smile. BYO Éclair for the full experience.

I just finished AT THE READY, the third book in the Global Security series by Sharon Michalove, a Chicago author. The author deftly blends a romance between ambitious lawyer Micki and wealthy security expert JL, with a twisty suspense story as they try to find Micki's stalker who threatens her life and endangers her parents. I'll definitely be looking for the first two books in the series.

This may have been better if I had read the first book in the series. It felt like I was missing some key points of the past relationships. Even with this gap, I felt this was a great mix of thriller and romance to keep the story very interesting and rooting for the main characters to have their happy ending.

This is the third book in the Global Security Unlimited Series, a Romantic Suspense. I liked Micki and JL's passionate story. They are both interesting characters. The storyline is fast-paced, filled with action, and twists and turns. Samantha Brentmoor and Jason Clarke did an excellent job bringing these characters, and this story to life. I enjoyed it. #AudiblyAddicted

I was able to get a sneak peek at this book. It's the perfect summer read- combining romance, action, and a bit of intrigue. Readers will get caught up in Micki and JL's lives as they try and navigate their feelings for each other and their complicated work lives.
