This “Behind the Scenes” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each blog, I’ll talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and sometimes reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book. Warning: Blogs may contain spoilers.

Hi romance lovers,

My latest romance, For Love’s Sake, uses the subtitle, “An Epic Historical/Fantasy Romantic Adventure”— that says quite a lot, but that’s the best way to describe it.

Here’s the summary and links:

For Love’s Sake

An Epic Historical/Fantasy Romantic Adventure

She left everything behind to be with him.
He risked losing everything to stay with her.
They were willing to sacrifice everything… for love’s sake

Through a case of mistaken identity, Prince Kevan of Alborg narrowly avoids an assassination attempt and wakes to find himself trapped in mad King Torok’s rat-infested dungeon. Just when he is about to give up hope, he is rescued by an unlikely ally—Torok’s daughter, Princess Adrianna.

Adrianna is desperate to flee her father’s kingdom and agrees to help the handsome stranger escape, but only if he takes her with him when he leaves. Although Kevan knows bringing Adrianna home will not sit well with his father and lead to other complications, he agrees.

They make their way to a waiting ship captained by Kevan’s brother, Mikhael, and set sail for Alborg. Along the way they are lost at sea during a ferocious storm, battle a murderous mercenary sent by Adrianna’s father, and try to deny their intense romantic feelings for each other.

When they arrive in Alborg, Kevan’s father, King Lenard, disapproves of Adrianna and drops the bombshell that Kevan is already engaged to be married. While Kevan tries to get out of the arranged marriage, Mikhael introduces Adrianna to members of the nobility in an effort to win over the king.

At his engagement ball, Kevan is forced to choose between his duty to his father and his loyalty to Adrianna. Soon after, Adrianna is kidnapped and Kevan and Mikhael band together to hunt down her abductors and rescue her before it’s too late.

***

For Love’s Sake is divided into three parts: The Castle, The Ship, and The Palace. Each part is devoted to a specific section of the longer, overall story, and they’re almost novellas unto themselves. But what readers don’t know is… this wasn’t how the book started out.

I originally outlined the story as a trilogy. (Yup, this one book would have been three.) In my outline, each part would have been its own self-contained book with a beginning, a middle, an end, and a central story arc.

Looking back on my original idea, I only have one question: What was I thinking??? First, nobody would want to read all that. Second, I didn’t want to write, edit, revise, and proofread all that. Writing one novel is hard enough; why triple my workload?

I’m glad to say common sense kicked in, and my writer’s intuition of what works and what doesn’t work, prevailed.

The book is 86,000 words, which is plenty. I wanted to fully develop each part, but without adding unnecessary scenes or too many details. For example, in part two, I could have described every rope, set of rigging, and mast on the ship for readers as Dray learns about them. But I didn’t want to go overboard. (Ha-ha.) Readers get the feel of being on the ship without seeing the day-to-day events that don’t impact the plot. The writer’s credo is “write tight.” Even in novels.

Some readers have asked me: If this is a romance, where are all the hot and heavy love scenes? Well… as I was editing/revising, I decided to delete several scenes that, although they were very nice, didn’t move the story along or add character development. When I came to some of the explicit love scenes between Kevan and Dray, I cut them or had the characters recall them in flashbacks.

But For Love’s Sake is more than a romance, it’s also an adventure. The characters experience lots of action outside of the bedroom: escaping a dungeon, fighting pirates, being lost at sea, getting kidnapped… And there’s plenty of emotional drama for everyone. The book is filled with lies, deception, sadness, secrets, jealousy, revenge, regret, and love in all its forms.

The secondary characters, Mikhael and Derick, play an important role in part three. Mikhael (Kevan’s brother), is married to Derick, and together, they set events in motion that bring the story to its conclusion.

I love Mikhael and Derick, and for a while I considered giving them their own book. I even wrote their entire backstory—their first meet, Derick’s disastrous lunch with Mikhael’s father (the king), how Derick became a Lord, and what happened when Mikhael and Derick moved into the manor house—but I never intend to publish it.

Why? Because it’s not a book in the traditional sense that it’s a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. There’s no plot. It’s merely a series of vignettes about their lives. But because I love them so much, I included Mikhael and Derick’s first meet as a bonus read. That story also explains the origins of the Freedom.

In the book Mikhael is sassy, self-assured, and bold… but he didn’t start out this way. As readers will see from the bonus read, he started out very confused and troubled. He’s come a long way (thanks to Derick) in the course of a few years. And because I love Mikhael so much, I gave him a fun bit of dialog: “Stand and deliver. Your money or your life.” I’ve always wanted to use that phrase in a story, and it fit Mikhael’s personality (and the scene) perfectly.

For Love’s Sake has plenty of action, drama, suspense, humor, love, and emotional growth to earn epic novel status. It was a lot of fun to write, and it’s one of my favorite romances. It’s also my last romance. (Yup, you read that right.)

I enjoy creating characters and settings and inventing troubles for my heroes and heroines to get into (and out of), and I love all my books. But when it comes to romances… I think I’m done.

Over the last twenty-five years I’ve been writing romances faithfully, and I had romances lined up in my head and/or outlined on paper just waiting to be written—but For Love’s Sake (my 24th romance) was the last one in line.

I’ll still write, but I’ll be focusing on horror/mystery/suspense short fiction.

For now, I’ll leave you with an epic tale of two people who risked everything… For Love’s Sake

Evie threw open Kat’s door, allowing it to bang against the wall.

Kat rolled over. “Kind of early, even for ye, Evie.”

Evie strode to Kat’s closet, flipping through each item. She didn’t say a word, fearful she’d give away something, anything that told her best friend she’d visited the Fae realm.

Kat sat up. “What are ye wearing? Yer hair’s lighter. I like it!”

Evie glanced down, forgetting the Fae gown, and shrugged. “Something for a play.” She cringed inside at lying to her friend but couldn’t tell anyone she was the one the Fae fable referred to. Not yet, at least.

Evie flipped back and forth between a crop top and a skirt. Kat’s chest was like her ma’s, larger than Evie’s, but Evie’s hips were bigger. Her clothes had to fit. Evie didn’t have time to go shopping. She wasn’t ready for the idea of selecting new clothing that she’d never bothered to glance at, let alone try on.

Grabbing the pink crop top and gray pencil skirt, Evie felt comfortable with it being long enough to cover her knees. She had to start somewhere. If she wore a miniskirt to work, ha! Evie envisioned falling, carrying ale, and flashing her personals to all of Maggie’s Bar. That’d be a hoot.

As Kat called after her, she strode from the room. “Sure, ye can borrow some of my clothes. Thanks for asking!”

In her room, Evie stripped the Fae gown and hung it, carefully placing it in the back of her closet. She slipped on a bra and undies and donned the crop top lifting her arms to ensure her boobs stayed covered. With the skirt on, she examined herself in the mirror.

“Nice. Not yer usual colors.” Kat leaned on the frame, yawning. “The form-fitting cotton looks good.”

Evie turned right, then left, checking her reflection. It needed something more. She moved to her closet, examining her belts. The skinny suspenders, that’s what it needed. Attaching those, she turned before the mirror and nodded.

As she sat to put on her black boots, Kat collapsed on her bed. “Why the change?” She rolled over. “Not that I’m complaining, but pink with light gray and form-fitting cotton isn’t yer norm.”

Kat sat up. “Manix! It has to be. Ye have the hots for Manix!”

Evie shrugged as she brushed her long hair out. This was good. If they thought she spent her time with Manix, they wouldn’t figure out she’d spent most of the evening in the Fae realm with Aodhán.

She placed her hair in pigtails and began braiding each one. She had to keep her hair up for her waitressing, but after work, when she went out with Manix, the braids would make her hair wavy when she let it out. Perfect.

Speaking of Fae realms, “Where’s Ewan and Doug?”

Kat stood and went to the door. “In bed as usual. They come back later and later each trip.” She sighed. “They should be careful.”

Evie checked the clock. Dash, it’s almost eleven am. Her shift started at noon, and Manix said he’d pick her up at nine when her shift ended.

She grabbed her leather jacket and went past Kat, who held her arm. “Do ye know what ye are doing with Manix? Ewan mentioned that some say he has a temper he can’t control.”

Evie pulled her arm away. “It’s nothing. I’m sure exaggeration.”

Evie ran to the door as Kat called after her, “Sure, don’t mind me, yer BFF. I only just arrived, and ye are off every evening with a man.” She sighed dramatically. “I’ll stay in with a movie again.”

Evie stopped at the opened door. “Soon, ye and I will go bar hopping. Introduce ye around.”

Kat chuckled, “Hold ye to it.”

Evie wasn’t certain what this day held. She’d not dated many men as none seemed to appeal to her. Ewan said it was because she compared them all to her Fae boy, and maybe she had. A human could never beat out the attraction a Fae held. It wasn’t a mere myth but the total truth.

I Kill Always Love You by Helen Golden Blog Tour!

I Kill Always Love You

A perfect sunny getaway with no drama. Or so they’d hoped…

BREAKING NEWS Woman Taken in for Questioning in Death of Actress’ Husband

Police in Portugal this morning told reporters that a woman is being questioned in connection with the murder of the film producer Jason ‘JT’ Kenda, who was married to award-winning actress Ariella St Gerome.

Mr Kenda, who was found dead in the swimming pool of the couple’s villa, was initially thought to have died following an accident, but now police believe the American was killed intentionally. The villa is next door to where Lady Beatrice, the Countess of Rossex, is currently holidaying with family and friends at the villa of TV’s Sir Hewitt and his wife, Lady Grace.

Who can say no to Lady Grace? When the daughter of Lady Grace’s housekeeper is suspected of murder, her ladyship requests that Bea and her friends prove the maid’s innocence. But with time running out, can they navigate the tangled web of lies, betrayal, and hidden motives before an innocent woman is imprisoned for a crime she didn’t commit?

Intro

Lady Beatrice, her cute dog Daisy, her son Sam, and best his friend, Archie, are joined by DS Richard Fitzwilliam, Bea’s best friends Perry and Simon, and Simon’s daughter Isla, for a relaxing holiday in the sun, and they can’t wait. They’ve all had a crazy year so far, and all they want to do is sit by the pool and chill. No mysteries. No murder. Just sunny weather, good food, and great company. Their villa, Villa Mer, is in a complex of three, but Bea hopes that they can keep their interaction with their neighbours to a minimum, especially when she finds out that one of them is famous American actress, Ella St Gerome, and her husband, hot-shot Hollywood film producer, JT Kenda. The couple have been splashed all over the newspapers recently with rumours that he wasn’t giving his wife the lead role in his next movie. Bea doesn’t want to be dragged into that drama. But it was never going to be that simple, was it?

Ella and JT are hosting a party at their villa. Bea and Rich have managed to get out of it, but Perry and Simon have gone because Perry is hoping to pick up some acting tips from the famous actress to help him prepare for his upcoming role as Algernon in the production of The Importance of Being Earnest back home. While the guests chat, JT goes off for his regular evening swim…

Because even on holiday, the sleuthing never stops!

Hello. I’m Helen Golden. I write British contemporary cozy whodunnits with a hint of humour. I live in small village in Lincolnshire in the UK with my husband, my step-daughter, her two cats, our two dogs, sometimes my step-son, and our tortoise.

I used to work in senior management, but after my recent job came to a natural end I had the opportunity to follow my dreams and start writing. It's very early in my life as an author, but so far I'm loving it.

It’s crazy busy at our house, so when I’m writing I retreat to our caravan (an impulsive lockdown purchase) which is mostly parked on our drive. When I really need total peace and quiet, I take it to a lovely site about 15 minutes away and hide there until my family runs out of food or clean clothes

He knew he’d probably had too much bourbon tonight. But he loved the warm and smoky feeling as it slipped down his throat. Am I drunk? No, it felt different somehow. Jason ‘JT’ Kenda swayed as he made his way along the edge of the pool, his vision shifting in and out of focus. The pool lights rippled in the water, shimmering like a mirage, but his head felt disconnected, like it wasn’t entirely his own. He blinked hard, but the haze only thickened.

Why do I feel like this? “I need to get to the pool house,” he muttered under his breath, the words slurring as they left his lips. This was his routine. The nightly swim—his way to sober up, clear his mind, and wash away the evening’s excess. His body, though sluggish, was determined to follow the plan. He stumbled. He stopped. Try again. One foot in front of the other, he told himself. The pool house wasn’t far.

A voice cut through the fog in his brain, startling him. “JT!”

He turned towards it unsteadily, his brow furrowing as he tried to make sense of the figure coming at him. It was too dark to clearly make out the person against the glowing water, but they looked… familiar. He shook his head slightly, the movement sending him off balance. He threw his arms out on either side in an attempt to steady himself. “Who is it?” His voice came out weaker than he’d expected, lost in the nightly hum of cicadas coming from the surrounding trees.

He blinked again, squinting, trying to focus, but the face before him seemed to blur and shift. The words—stern, pointed, were a meaningless jumble in JT’s ears. His head lolled slightly, and he shook it again, trying to clear the feeling that it was stuffed full of cottonwool. But the movement only made the spinning worse.

The shape got closer. “Forget your swim, JT. Go to bed. You’re drunk.” There was frustration in their tone, but he barely registered it. His limbs felt too heavy. His thoughts slipped away before they fully formed. The warmth of the bourbon had turned into a strange, sluggish heat coursing through his veins.

Something is wrong.

He felt it deep in his chest. He wanted to ask for help. But the words wouldn’t form in his muffled brain.

The person muttered something that made no sense to him before they faded into the darkness.

What’s happening to me?

JT exhaled slowly. “The pool house,” he whispered again. His mind latched onto the idea like it was the only thing tethering him to reality. The pool house. Get changed. Swim. Routine. It would make everything better. It always did.

He stumbled forward, his legs buckling slightly. His body felt foreign, like it belonged to someone else, but he willed it on. The path curved ahead, but something shifted beside him—a heavy presence, cold against his skin. He turned, unsteady, his sluggish brain struggling to catch up as he noticed the statue beside him. It teetered dangerously on its plinth. For a moment, he thought he might have brushed it—or had it moved on its own? The thought flickered and faded as gravity took hold.

The statue still wobbled on its base. A slow, ominous sway.

“No…” The word came out as a whisper. His hands shot out instinctively, but his movements were too slow, too clumsy. The statue tilted, teetered, and then crashed forward with a deafening thud. Pain exploded in his forehead as it struck him.

The impact sent him reeling. His feet slipped on the tiles, and the world spun violently. A brief, dizzying moment of weightlessness overtook him before the cold shock of water enveloped his body. He gasped as it rushed into his lungs, burning his chest.

Then there was an eerie calm. Dreamlike, he felt himself sink, his limbs heavy as if encased in lead. It was a comforting feeling, like the one he normally got the second before he fell asleep.

Darkness crept in from the edges of his vision as the shimmering pool lights blurred above him.

Within minutes, the world faded into silence.
